What is the Super Bowl?

The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the highest level of professional American football in the United States, culminating a season that begins in the late summer of the previous calendar year, finally declaring the super bowl winners. This game is held at a pre-selected site, usually a city that hosts an NFL team. The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year in which it is held.

The game was created as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and its then-rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It was agreed that the two leagues' champion teams would play in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game until the merger was to officially begin in 1970. After the merger, each league was redesignated as a "conference", and the game was then played between the conference champions with one being declared as the Super Bowl Winners.

The day on which the Super Bowl is played is now considered a de facto American national holiday, called "Super Bowl Sunday". It is the second-largest day for U.S. food consumption, after Thanksgiving Day. In addition, the Super Bowl has frequently been the most watched American television broadcast of the year. There has been a lot of betting as well on who will be the super bowl winners each year.

Super Bowl Winners:

The Pittsburgh Steelers (super bowl winners) have won the most Super Bowls with six championships (record 6–2), while both the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers have five wins each (Cowboys 5–3; 49ers a perfect 5–0). Dallas and Pittsburgh, both super bowl winners, have the most Super Bowl appearances with eight, while the Buffalo Bills' dream of becoming super bowl winners were never fulfilled. They have the most consecutive appearances with four losses in a row from 1991 to 1994.

The Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings have also been denied being super bowl winners and have also lost a record four Super Bowls. Buffalo and Minnesota are both 0–4 and Denver is 2–4. The record for consecutive wins is two and is shared by seven franchises: the 1967-68 Green Bay Packers, the 1973-74 Miami Dolphins, the 1975-76 and 1979-80 Steelers (the only team to accomplish this feat twice), the 1989-90 49ers, the 1993-94 Cowboys, the 1998-99 Broncos, and the 2004-05 New England Patriots. Of these, only the 1993-94 Cowboys and Bills have competed in the championship in consecutive years, with the Cowboys being the super bowl winners in both the instances.

Super Bowl Winners - The Odds

When betting on the super bowl winners, one should always first consider that year to year trends are a very weak reference point when doing your "big game" handicapping, especially with the previous year's super bowl winners, as often times they don't even make the playoffs the next year! Dominance shown by the AFC or, NFC is often times a pure fluke as well. The bottom line is that each year, anything can happen. Heck, that's why they play the game and that's how we have so many super bowl winners.

The Princess - Predictor of the Super Bowl Winners

Princess the Camel has not only been right about five of the past six Super Bowl winners, but she was 14-6 straight up picking NFL games this season. In her best year, 2008, she was 17-5.

“It started out when a local radio station was looking to have some fun, so they asked Princess who was going to win a particular game each week, and it just took off from there,” Bergmann said. “Now we have guys calling up on Sunday morning wanting to know who Princess has picked that week. One guy even asked if she does lottery numbers.”

Her best season was 2008, when she got 17 out of 22 games right, including correctly picking the Pittsburgh Steelers as the Super Bowl winners.

Just like Paul the Octopus, Princess has also been predicting the super bowl winners, the food way.
